第一，only引導的短語或句子放在句首作狀語時，通常要使用倒裝結構。例如。

二、not only...(but also)當它出現在句子的開頭時，如果框架與兩個句子相連，則常用倒裝。例如，

Not only did he speak correctly,but he also spoke easily.

他不但說得準確，而且說得很輕松。

第三，only放在不定式的前面，常常表示不愉快或出乎意料的結果。例如，如果你把它放在不定式的前面。

四、“too...to...”在結構中，表示否定意思，但在結構中，“only too...to...”結構中，only too = very，表示肯定意思。例如

五、在“one of 復數名詞 定語從句”在結構上，定語從句一般被視為修飾復數名詞，謂語應采用復數形式。但在“the only one of 復數名詞 定語從句”在結構上，定語從句被視為修飾“the only one”，謂語動詞應采用單數形式。如

這是近兩年出版的最好的小說之一。

He was the only one of the boys who was given a prize.

他是這些孩子中唯一得到獎勵的。

She is the only one of the girls who has been to the US.

她是唯一一個去過美國的女孩。

六、If only 一種虛擬語氣，表達愿望或一種未實現的條件，多用于感嘆句，其主句常被省略。例如，

If only she would marry me!

如果她能嫁給我該多好！

If only he had known about it!

如果他當時知道這件事該多好！

If only you could have been here earlier that day!

如果你那天早點到這里就好了。

If only there were forty-eighty hours in a day.

如果一天有48個小時。
